Regulatory Issues in Coaching, What you Need to Know

The Goal of the ICF Regulatory Committee
To research, monitor, evaluate, and proactively contribute to government and regulatory bodies in order to educate, articulate, and develop our growing profession of coaching as a self-regulated profession.

The ICF Regulatory Committee was initially appointed in the summer of 2002 to support the ICF Mission Statement and to protect and preserve the integrity of the Coaching profession. As a result of its works, the Board decided to appoint in 2007 an ongoing Committee.

Summary of the Current Regulatory Committee Charter
For 2007, the Regulatory Committee of ICF has been asked to do the following:

·    Oversee the monitoring of relevant regulatory issues around the globe.

·    Respond to regulatory issues as the need arises, informing the Board of critical situations and acting on Board policy.

·    Develop structures, processes and documents to support the above.

·    Develop strategic relationships with governments, boards, business leaders, and other coaching organizations involved or interested in regulation, proactively.

·    Make policy recommendations to ICF Board.

What You can Do
We recommend ICF member coaches review the reference information posted on the ICF Web site, stay informed through their ICF Chapter and through the Coaching World newsletter. Should you become aware of interest by your local (State or National) government to regulate coaching, or of a regulatory initiative, which could affect the practice of coaching, please advise the Committee and your local ICF Chapter. Questions may be sent to Regulatory Committee via e-mail icfheadquarters@coachfederation.org.
