ICF Credentialing

The ICF offers the only globally recognized, independent credentialing program. ICF's credentialing program is now in its second decade of existence with more than 4,000 individuals holding one of the three ICF Credentials.

The Purpose of the ICF Credentialing Program is:

  • Establish and administer minimum standards for credentialing professional coaches and coach training agencies.
  • Assure the public that participating coaches and coach training agencies meet or exceed these minimum standards.
  • Reinforce professional coaching as a distinct and self-regulating profession.

The ICF Credential is awarded to professional coaches and coach training agencies that validate they meet or exceed these minimum standards.

ICF Credentials Growing in Demand

According to the ICF Global Coaching Study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, 52 percent of coaches report that their coaching clients expect the coach they hire to be credentialed.

ICF Credentialing System to Continue to Meet Global Standards

In order to continue to meet the growing global need for the ICF Credential, the association is taking steps to refine the current credentialing system. These enhancements will use the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for bodies operating certification of persons as a framework.

This initiative will further define the current system, maintain and increase its permanent value and continue to strengthen global credibility among coaches and clients everywhere.

For more information on this project see page 18 of the 2007 ICF Annual Report and past issues of Coaching World, ICF’s monthly newsletter which can be accessed from the home page.
